Atterberg limits and linear shrinkage in GeotechOS Lab
Find the liquid limit, plastic limit, plasticity index and linear shrinkage of a soil in GeotechOS Lab, and record a non-plastic soil. The course follows AS 1289.3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.2.1, 3.3.1 and 3.4.1, and TfNSW T108, T109 and T113.

This course teaches you to do the Atterberg limits and the linear shrinkage of a soil in GeotechOS Lab. You book in the test and record how the sample was prepared. You find the liquid limit by the four point or the one point method, and the plastic limit from two determinations. Lab works out the plasticity index and the linear shrinkage. You also learn what to do when a soil is non-plastic.
What you learn
- What the liquid limit, plastic limit, plasticity index and linear shrinkage tell an engineer.
- Which method a test uses, and what changes between the AS and the TfNSW methods.
- How to type each trial, and what Lab checks before it gives a result.
- How to record a non-plastic soil, so that the report shows NP.
- How the result is reviewed, printed on the report and used by other tests.
Who this course is for
Laboratory technicians who do soil classification tests in GeotechOS Lab, and the reviewers and approvers who check them. Know the tests at the bench before you start. The course teaches Lab, not the methods.
Take this course before the MDD/OMC course: the MDD curing time comes from the liquid limit.
What you need
- A free GeotechOS account.
- Your laboratory's licensed copies of the AS 1289.3 methods, and the TfNSW methods it runs. The course gives clause numbers, never the standards' text, tables or limits.
How it works
Ask to join. Our team checks with you and your laboratory, then enrols you. Each module has short lessons and a quiz of four questions. Pass every quiz and read every lesson to get your certificate.
Questions
Can I book in a test on the iPad?
No. You book in tests on a computer: Lab on Windows, on a Mac, or in a browser. The test then shows on the iPad under Today, where you do it.
Does Lab support the cone liquid limit?
Not yet. Lab supports the four point and the one point Casagrande methods.
Can I do the linear shrinkage without the limits?
Not yet. In Lab, the linear shrinkage is part of a method with the limits, for example AS1289 3.1.1 & 3.2.1 & 3.3.1 & AS 1289.3.4.1. Both are on one worksheet.
