Work offline and sync

Borehole Logging saves your logs on your device and works with no internet. Learn how sync works, what the status bar tells you, and how holds work.

Applies toWindows and macOSWeb browserPhone and tablet

Borehole Logging saves each change on your device first. You can log holes on a site with no signal. When the device is online, Borehole Logging sends your changes to the server and gets the changes that other people made. This is a sync.

How Borehole Logging syncs

Borehole Logging syncs by itself at times, for example when you add a hole, and when the internet connection comes back. You do not need to do anything.

To sync now:

  1. Click Home › Sync now, or press F5.
  2. Look at the status bar. When the sync is complete, it shows Up to date · synced just now.

What the status bar tells you

Status bar What it means What to do
Up to date · synced just now The server has all your changes. Nothing.
3 changes to send Some changes are on this device only. Wait, or click Sync now.
Offline · 3 changes saved on this computer There is no internet connection. Your changes are safe on this device. Continue to work. Borehole Logging sends the changes when the connection comes back.
Sending 3 changes… or Syncing… A sync is in progress. Wait.
2 entries need review The server did not accept some changes as they were. Click Home › Review. See Review changes.
Sync problem The sync stopped with an error. Read the message. Click Sync now to try again. If the problem continues, contact support.

Caution: Do not sign out, clear the browser data or delete the app while there are changes to send. Changes that are not sent are on this device only.

Holds: one device edits a hole at a time

When you start to edit a hole, Borehole Logging holds the hole for your device. Other devices can see the hole, but they cannot change it. This stops two people from changing the same log in different ways.

The status bar shows the hold for the open hole:

  • BH01 · editing will hold it for this computer — nobody holds the hole. When you edit it, your device holds it.
  • BH01 is held by this computer while you edit — your device holds the hole.
  • BH01 is held by device name · read-only — another device holds the hole. You cannot change it now.
  • BH01 is locked in the office — the office has locked the hole. Nobody can change it.

The hold stops 10 minutes after your last edit. To let other people edit the hole before then, click Hole › Release. Borehole Logging sends your changes first, then releases the hole.

Review changes

Sometimes the server does not accept a change as it is. The status bar then shows entries need review. Borehole Logging does not delete these changes. You decide what to do with each one.

  1. Click Home › Review.
  2. Read the message for each change, then do one of these:
Message What happened What to do

Another hole with this identifier already exists in the investigation. Two people added a hole with the same identifier. Give your hole a different identifier and save it again.
