Word Meaning in Lab
Approve The last of the three signatures on a result. An approved signatory approves it after a review.
Assigned values The MDD and OMC assigned to a uniform material from six approved results (AS 1289.5.4.2).
Authorisation Permission for a person to do, review or approve the tests of one method at one laboratory.
Batch sheet One sheet for many open tests of the same method.
Book in Record a job: its docket, samples and tests, in one step.
Breaking session The cylinders and cubes broken at one time, with the machine checks done once.
Calibration A check of equipment by a provider, with a certificate.
CBR California bearing ratio: the resistance of a compacted soil to a piston, as a percentage of the resistance of a standard crushed rock.
Characteristic value A value of a lot worked out from the mean and spread of its tests, for example the lower characteristic air voids.
Check A routine check of equipment by the laboratory, for example a balance check.
Client The organisation that a project is for, with its people. Rates and invoices are kept in the CRM.
Compaction control report A report of the field density tests of one layer of an earthworks lot.
Density ratio The field dry density as a percentage of the maximum dry density.
Earthworks lot An area of fill built and tested as one, with its material and specification.
Governing penetration The penetration, 2.5 mm or 5.0 mm, that gives the greater CBR. The reported CBR is from this penetration.
Issue Release a report to the client. A correction makes a new issue that supersedes the old one.
Job The work a client asks for at one time, with a number such as 1001. Also called a request.
Lockout A block on equipment that failed a check or is out of calibration.
Main contact The person at a client to call first. A client has one main contact.
MDD and OMC The maximum dry density and optimum moisture content from a compaction test.
Multi-sample request A job whose samples share one header and the same tests, usually taken on site.
Non-conformance Work that did not meet a requirement, recorded with its cause and corrective action.
Oven run The containers that are in the oven at one time, weighed to constant mass.

Site lot Site tests judged as one lot, for example an asphalt lot.
Site visit A field job on the schedule, where site tests are recorded.
Surcharge The annular weights on a CBR specimen during the soak and the penetration. They model the layers of pavement above.
Swell How much a CBR specimen rises during the soak, as a percentage of its height.
Sync Send your work to the server and get the changes that other people made.
Test One test on one sample, with a number such as 1001-T01.
Work queue The list of tests to do. On an iPad and a phone it is called Today.
