Oven runs for moisture content

Dry many moisture containers in one oven run in GeotechOS Lab: record the oven temperature, weigh to constant mass, and send each dry mass to its test.

An oven run collects the containers that are in the oven at the same time. You weigh all of them at each weigh-up. When the mass of a container stops changing, Lab gives its dry mass to its test.

You use an oven run for each test that dries soil in an oven, for example moisture content (AS 1289.2.1.1), Atterberg limits and the dry density–moisture relationship.

Before you start

On each test, enter the container mass and the wet mass first. A container shows in the oven run only when its wet mass is entered.

Start an oven run

  • Computer: click Testing › Oven run.
  • iPad: on Today, tap Oven. The button shows how many containers are waiting to dry.

Add the ovens and the balance

  1. Under Ovens and balance, choose the oven, for example Oven 1.
  2. Type the Reading of the oven thermometer and its Correction. Lab shows the corrected temperature and the range, for example 107 °C (105–110).
  3. If you use more than one oven, click Add another oven.
  4. Choose the balance.

If an oven is out of its range, Lab tells you. Check the containers that dried in that oven before you use their dry mass.

Add the containers

  1. Click Add containers. Lab shows the containers that are waiting to dry.
  2. Select the containers that you put in the oven.
  3. Click Add.

Each container shows its test number, its sample, the container mass and the wet mass.

Weigh the containers

  1. When you take the containers out to weigh them, click Weigh-up now. Lab records the time.
  2. Type the mass of each container in the next Dry box. Lab shows the change from the last weighing and an estimate of the moisture content.
  3. Put the containers back in the oven. Do the next weigh-up later.
  4. When two weighings of a container agree, turn on Constant mass. Lab gives the dry mass to the test, and the switch shows Dry mass given to the test.

Note: Lab keeps the oven run on the device. You can close it and open it again at the next weigh-up.
